Another Point of View.

Often we only hear a story from one characters point of view. This could mean that we don't always get the full picture, only one side of the story.

A perfect example of this is Bilbo in The Hobbit. He describes the escape from Gollum and the caves to the dwarves as if he were a real hero; dodging, ducking and squeezing.

How do you think Gollum would describe this part of the story?

  • Bilbo cheated at the riddles.
  • Bilbo stole his precious ring.
  • Bilbo escaped by making himself invisible.

These are the main points, but there are others.

Task One

You are going to re-write the meeting with Gollum; the riddles and Bilbo's escape from GOLLUM'S point of view. Remember, Gollum's version will probably be completely different from the one in the book.

Task Two

Think of these parts of the story:

  1. The dwarves attacking the goblins.
  2. Dori getting into trouble for dropping Bilbo.

Choose one of these and re-write it either from a Goblin's point of view (1) or from Dori's point of view (2).

Here are a few notes to help you.

  • Dwarves were in Goblin's cave without permission
  • Dwarves were armed with swords etc.
  • Killed their leader
  • Dori told off for dropping Bilbo in Goblin's cave
  • Dori told off for leaving Bilbo at bottom of tree
