I have a Year 5 class and I've put all the 'Myths & Legends' aspects of the literacy strategy together to make a 1/2 term topic. My class loved it. I'm just about to finish the topic and my class were very enthusiatic about letting you know what a great time they had this term with this focus. We used the idea of guided sessions to produce a story as a group but in addition...
Literacy
- wrote extended sentences using theme of King Arthur.......give the class a basic sentence i.e Arthur picked up his sword, then roll dice & amend sentence as follows:
1 = add adjective
2 = add adverb
3 = add extra clause
4 = change verb
5 = change sentence order
6 = add a time connective
Repeat altering the new sentence or alter another given by the teacher. This is quite good as a whiteboard activity by throwing dice 2/3 times and asking pairs to generate their best expanded sentence & then share around the class. |
- wrote pure description paragraphs based on the knight - incorporating simile/metaphor
- wrote description paragraphs based on a knight approaching Camelot for the first time and used one of these as the opening paragraph in the story
- wrote and illustrated a bestiary
Numeracy
- area and perimeter work based upon the shields and flags of the knights. Draw flags and split into rectangles or compound shapes including 1/2 squares (SEN to have simple rectangles only). Give rectangle 'flags' and divide into 2 equal halves so each knight has a different design (on squared paper)
- area and perimeter investigation (Click here for the powerpoint of this investigation)
Art
- water color pictures of the knights, Camelot etc
- large scale collage of a knight
- water colour of shield designs which were then covered with a OHP transparency with cm squares printed to estimate area of the different colours
- make a papier mache box to hold the treasure from a quest
Thanks for some great ideas and a fab topic - I loved it & so did my class.' |
