The
Turbulent Term of Tyke Tyler
By Gene Kemp
Sheila
Black has sent in these activities based on the
book. Helen Lundy sent in the school report idea. If you have any of your own activities then please
send them in so we can add to this collection.

Chapter
Two
|
- Look
at the Head's speech at the bottom of Page 30. It begins,
"Tyke, I know you to be a disobedient....." and ends,
".....tendency towards mendacity." Rewrite this speech
in your own words, using everyday English and not all
the long words the Head likes!
- Write
the letter that the Head sends to Tyke's father, explaining
the incident with the ten-pound note. Set out the letter
correctly: The address at the top of the letter will
be: Cricklepit Combined School, Exeter, Devon EX1 46YG
and you should also add a date. End the letter, Yours
sincerely, and then make up a name for the Head. Remember
that he uses lots of long words and difficult expressions.
Do your best to imitate this style! (Use Chapter 2 to
help you.)

Answer
these questions in full sentences, giving as much detail
as you can:
- Describe
the book that Mr Merchant has written. How has he found
his information for the book?
- Why
is the school bell no longer rung? And what is the possible
link with one of Tyke's relations?
- In
your own words, summarise the conversation Mr Merchant
has with his class about the student teacher (Page 45).
Show clearly what the class thinks and what Mr Merchant
thinks.
- In
what ways is the student the class meet on Page 46 not
like the one they were expecting?

Chapter

|
- Read
the description of the room in the old paper mill. (Second
half of page 53). Using a full page of your exercise
book, draw a plan of this room including all the details
you can. Label everything in your plan.
- Now
you have read almost half the book, can you predict
what might happen next?
- Which
clues that you have read in the first half of the book
have helped you to make your predictions?
